PRIMAL FICTION
- NINA TOBIEN
Opening hours
The exhibition Primal Fiction by Nina Tobien shows works that primarily consist of a combination of textiles, ceramics and painting.
Found simply patterned or dyed textiles that show signs of wear are sewn together, sometimes mended and stretched onto stretcher frames. Fragile-looking small ceramic elements - remnants that were left over in the ceramics workshop - are occasionally mounted on the textile surfaces. Fleeting painterly accents, almost appearing like a gentle touch, unite the various materials to create sometimes abstract, sometimes landscape-like visual worlds that seem difficult to classify in terms of time and place.
The way of painting also seems to be speculative on the hand-made larger ceramic plates that serve as image backgrounds. Silhouettes and shapes suggest rather than establish, giving the impression to be in the process of building up or breaking down landscape constellations - trapped or liberated in a kind of in-between world.
Tobien reacts to the cracked glazes, the stains, the patches, seams or textile patterns with her painting. During the painting process, no expectations are set; instead, Tobien allows herself to freely fabulate and therefore new or different narratives can be made possible.
The careful, reparative handling of the mostly porous or damaged source material and the effortless painting style that responds to the given circumstances can be seen as an impulse for redress and healing.
